Building connections is so personally and professionally important to me that I founded my business on them. Throughout my life, my connections with others have deeply impacted the person I have become. Building genuine relationships with voters is the best way to represent them – they give you the unvarnished truth in criticism but are a unique resource for the boots-on-the-ground impact of legislation and can be your biggest cheerleaders.
When you show up in a voter’s inbox weekly or biweekly during the session, providing access to information s/he can get nowhere else, and explaining legislation in a way that’s personally relevant to the voter and their family, you establish a trust – regardless of whether the voter agrees with you. Just by being a conduit of information about their state government, you are helping to expand transparency and citizen engagement. Growing relationships, informing the electorate, and winning elections go hand-in-hand.
